I wonder how many feel the way I do about the situation regarding standardisation, particularly of propane cylinders. Why is it that within Europe you still come up against incompatibility when you travel and have run out of gas ? Yes, you can now get the same sort of cylinder in exchange within much of northern Europe but the UK is not within that grouping. In fact, the UK fitting is possibly unique worldwide. OK, so you decide to base your supply on the continental cylinder - but you cannot get it filled in the UK (on the other hand, you can in most places get any cylinder filled in other countries, including the UK type). Yes, you can carry around both types of cylinders - and then also both types of regulators, but why should you have to go to that sort of trouble and waste of precious space ? This is entirely analogous to the situation with electric plugs and sockets - what a mess of different standards that is. I know that in both cases (gas and electricity) the UK claims to be unique in the interest of safety, and no doubt the others defend their systems on the very same grounds. I for one do not accept that there is any clear cut advantage beyond the commercial one (captive market) and national pride. How do others feel ?

hi last year i bought an adapter off ebay which allows me to fill my gas tanks up at a garage, this includes a fitting for use on the continent,, before i got the adapter it was costing 25 to 30 pounds depending on where i swapped my bottles, per bottle, now it cost me around 14pounds to fill them myself and surprise surprise they last a whole lot longer look on ebay it was well worth the investment

One of my favourite things about motorhoming is that feeling of being (relatively) safe in a metal shell with the elements beating you up from the outside. Then again maybe I'm a bit weird!

hi again mark,this isnt very techy chat but while the site is young, well lets put some tech into it my van is an 04 and ive had it almost 2 years now and as much as i love it, its something of a love hate relationship when i first got it it was the mutts nutts and still is but after prolonged use one gets to find those irritaring niggling little design faults that show whoever designed it never went camping in one for example the hatches to the pump and the water tank in the floor are raised so when sweeping the van out you get all the bits stuck round the edges and the step into the van is also raised so you cant get a clean sweep out the van and you can tell its manufactured by a caravan co. making the bed up in the lounge area is like an episode of the krypton factor all those cushions but then we always use the over cab bed with the sliver of a mattress which i have enhanced with a memory foam mattress on top and some sleeping bags underneath this is very comfy unless your in a force ten i did move to less exposed spot ie round the back of asda wellim back home now on the wirral but i not for long all the best dave

We have spent many many months touring all around Europe, We found the solution buy the refillable bottles and just top up at any fuel station that supplies autogas, (GPL if abroad)
WE found that most fuel station had this and it was not a problem for us, Apart from Spain.
We have now fitted all our hire vehicles with this, www.scottishtourer.co.uk

What do you do in Spain (where we live!) We have to carry Spanish cylinders!

Spain is a problem, if we are heading to spain we fill up both cylinders in France this lasts us around six weeks, WE did download a list of GPL sites in spain and found a few (google GPL locations Spain), but they are very few and far between, We found one In Barcelona, another in Valencia, And one in an Industrial estate in Malaga, Potugal has loads so no Problem there.
